Tony Smibert is a painter, writer, and educator whose work reflects eastern and western traditions.
Tony Smibert trained at the National Gallery Art School in Victoria, graduated from Melbourne State College as specialist art teacher and then taught for 10 years before moving to Tasmania to paint full time. Three decades and more than 50 solo exhibitions later he is now an internationally renowned painter, a Visiting Artist Researcher at Tate Britain, the author and co-author of numerous publications and a leading expert in the painting techniques of JMW Turner. He teaches around the world (with master-classes at leading art museums including Tate Britain, The National Gallery of Australia and Art Gallery of South Australia in 2013). Based in Tasmania, he is married to artist Carmel Burns. They have two adult children, Olivia and Grace.
