Excerpts from Life Membership Presentation Speech to Pauline Winwood, given by Carolyn Riley on behalf of LAS Committee and Members at the Silo Grain Restaurant on September 14, 2020. (see below) |

Pauline’s recent retirement from Launceston Art Society’s committee has highlighted just how much she has contributed to the Society, since becoming a member in 2003.
Soon after, it seemed a natural progression for Pauline to accept a position on the committee. Her official roles have included:
Behind the scenes, tapping away on her computer for countless hours, Pauline researched, prepared and implemented all manner of LAS business.
But simultaneously, she also demonstrated a very visible involvement in LAS administration, whilst actively engaged in the many other Society activities.
For almost a decade, Pauline has been chief editor of Art Beat. In that role, she has been instrumental in producing about 4800 copies in her time alone. Amongst us today are past Art Beat editors – Margaret Baker, Louise Skabo and Phil Austen. No doubt they too will concur, that based on their personal experience, taking on this position is no mean feat.
Obtaining reports from recalcitrant committee members, in time to proof-read and meet this publishing deadline, collating and manipulating photographs and graphic images, researching new articles, presenting them in an ever-evolving, attractive format, all these and more, were areas addressed in the lead up to publication.
And it does not end there. On top of pulling the magazine together, Pauline spent many hours at the Eskleigh office, printing, packaging and then disseminating thousands of copies.
As IT & Social Media Officer, Pauline continued developing and updating the LAS website, after it was introduced by Louise Skabo. Pauline initiated our Facebook page, continuously updated it and set up a Paperless Post invitation site. She designed countless awards, certificates, flyers and invitations and largely influenced an increasingly professional LAS profile. As our ‘photographic journo’ for years, Pauline captured innumerable images. These included those of LAS artists’ works, workshop participants, guests and LAS members enjoying exhibition openings and special events.
On top of all that, Pauline is a prolific artist. She has exhibited diverse paintings (many of them award winning) in multiple LAS exhibitions. She assisted with and attended almost all of these functions. Pauline is passionate about not only her own artwork but is encouraging of others. Even though she is already a competent and well-recognized artist, Pauline is forever seeking new learning experiences, much of these acquired through regular participation in LAS workshops.
Next year, 2021 heralds the 130th anniversary of Launceston Art Society. Over its long history, it is members such as Pauline Winwood, with vision and a willingness to actively contribute, who have upheld LAS traditions and yet valued change where change is needed.
In so doing, Pauline has helped ensure the sustained success of our prestigious Society.
And so, it is with great pleasure that we gratefully acknowledge Pauline’s invaluable contribution, by awarding her with Life Membership of Launceston Art Society.
Thank you, Pauline and congratulations on receiving this well-deserved award.
