Margaret Baker |
'Margaux' - Watercolour & occasional pastellist
Born and schooled in Launceston, Margaret has always had the urge to illustrate. Art classes at Launceston High School were the best classes of the school week. After leaving school, marrying John and creating a family, Margaret went back to TAFE (Tech, as it was called then) and was fortunate to be there during the halcyon days, under the tutelage of Alan and Jo MacIntyre as well as Geoff Tyson. Better teachers would be hard to find! Dreams of becoming 'an artist' were swept aside when the opportunity to return to work got in the way. After a gap of almost 30 years, a few days away at Ansons Bay with a friend and former neighbour, Cathie, who was studying art at the time, the need to paint resurfaced. Adult Education classes with Rosemary Hill were Margaret's introduction to watercolour painting. Life drawing classes at TAFE with Fred Fullerton followed by the joy of workshops with Tony Smibert - all form the basis of Margaret's work. Margaret became Secretary of the Launceston Art Society Inc. in 2005 and was President of LAS from 2006 to 2008. She was awarded Life Membership of the LAS in recognition of her outstanding service.
