Although enjoying drawing since a student, it is only in recent years that I have been introduced to the wonders of watercolour.
I have studied under Jonathon Bowden (pastels), Chantelle Del Rue (drawing and painting), Rosemary Hill (watercolour) and Leonie Duff (pastels). I have also had the pleasure of attending weekend workshops with some of the country’s best water colourists - Robert Wade, Roger Murphy, Joseph Zbukvic and David Taylor. I have recently completed my Diploma of Art, Craft & Design at Launceston College of TAFE. During this study I have been introduced to drawing upside down, blind contour drawing, pastels, life drawing, photography and more recently ceramics.
I have exhibited on a regular basis over the past ten years at Eskleigh, Rotary Art (formerly Max Fry), Connections (Scotch Oakburn College), The Launceston Art Society, The Not Yet Famous Exhibition (Adult Education) and a special fund raising exhibition for Camp Quality in 2000. I have also had a small solo exhibition to help raise funds for the Cancer Council of Australia. I was delighted to receive a judges’ commendation at the Tasmania Art Awards at Eskleigh in 2003 and also in the same year to gain third place in the Launceston Art Society Exhibition. In 2006 my painting, “Storm Over Rosemary’s Lake”, was short-listed for the 2007 Capital Chemist calendar and subsequently included in the calendar. In 2010 I won the major prize at the inaugural Chudleigh Art Awards and received a judges' commendation at the LAS Holy Trinity Exhibition the same year. I also won the 'packers prize' at the Entally exhibition in 2010 for my work, "Paterson Street vista". In 2013 I won the acquisitive prize at the Meandering exhibition with a graphite and charcoal work entitled "Miss Meander" and in 2015, also at Meandering, won a 'Highly Commended' award. In 2016 I won the Central Coast Council major acquisitive prize at Artex 16 the annual exhibition organized by Rotary Club of Ulverstone West.
I still enjoy working with pencils, and I am starting to appreciate pastels, but the magic of watercolour is fascinating and the challenge will be a life long pursuit. I have tackled a variety of subjects in my painting, but it is landscapes which remain a favourite, especially the scenery of Tasmania (often including animals) and in particular, the waterways.
