Here is the artist profile for Richard Holwill, one of our hugely talented artists who will be demonstrating at the Artists in Action Day on 3rd May.
I am a sculptor, resident in Burnie, working in galvanised, welded wire-mesh. My work is predominantly figurative, exploring the myriad range of human activity. I try to bring a sense of dynamism and fluidity to my sculptures, juxtaposing the rigidity and flatness of the medium from which they were created. My sculptures, although structurally sound, are only a single layer of mesh thick, giving the works an ephemeral, see-through quality. This shadow quality of the works is particularly evident at night, under lights, when the sculptures project themselves onto their surroundings. My works are mounted on an eclectic mix of Tasmanian timbers, hard-cover books and antique pieces.
